Handwashing: the simplest public-health tool
Washing hands with soap reduces diarrhoeal and respiratory infections. Here's how to do it properly.
Handwashing with soap and water is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infection.
When to wash
- Before preparing or eating food
- After using the toilet or changing nappies
- After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose
- After caring for someone who is sick
How
Wet hands, apply soap, and scrub all surfaces — backs of hands, between fingers, under nails — for at least 20 seconds. Rinse and dry with a clean cloth.
